School History 1954 - 1971In September 1954 a grammar school came into being, at what is now Lees Brook Community School. The original school name was Chaddesden Grammar School, and the first head was Mr A M L Houston. In 1957 the school moved to new buildings in Spondon and changed its name to Spondon Park Grammar School. Building work continued until 1967 when the sports hall, craft and 6th form block were completed and occupied. These buildings still remain and provide the core buildings of West Park School. During this period a house system was introduced. All pupils joined one of the four houses Bannister, Chataway, Hilary and Tensing. In 1969 Mr Houston retired and a new Head Mr Pitts joined the school. In 1971, with the introduction of comprehensive education to Derby, Spondon Park Grammar merged with Spondon House to become Spondon School. |
