School History 1989 - Present

The school was renamed West Park Community School in 1989 following the reorganisation of secondary education in the county. As the school was not able to retain its existing name, the decision was taken to use the names of the roads adjacent to the school, West Road and Park Road .

Mr Richard Hughes returned as head of the new school. The previous year he had been seconded to the body involved in the reorganisation of secondary education within the county.

In 1993 after extensive consultation and discussions, the decision was made to become grant maintained. The school was still on two sites, the lower and upper. Following a detailed condition survey, it was decided to work towards consolidating the school on the upper site. This took several years to achieve.

In September 1996 the 6th form was reinstated and in September 1997 moved to a purpose built study centre. The 6th form continued until 2003.

In 1997 Mr Hughes retired and a new head, Mr Brian Walker, was appointed.

The work on consolidating the school onto one site continued with the refurbishment of E block and alterations to W block and the building of new class rooms to the north of the site in 2000.

By 2001 the Park Road site had been vacated and the new classrooms in the new S block had come into use. The empty buildings became the target of arsonists and by 2003 the damage was so severe that the remaining buildings and the swimming pool were demolished.

In 2005 the school gained Mathematics and Computing Specialist Student Status and was renamed West Park School.
