Applying for Jobs
This can be difficult for many people, especially those who haven’t had recent experience of applying for work. Large organisations tend to use three documents, which will be sent to all job applicants, plus a checklist for their own use:
-
Job description - describes the demands of the role in terms of its main duties and responsibilities. It gives a picture of the job, explains why it exists and the authority attached to it.
Read this very carefully to make sure that this is the kind of job you want.
-
Person specification- defines a job in human terms. It describes the ideal person for the job by listing what is essential and desirable as regards experience, skills, knowledge and qualifications needed for the job.
It will also tell you how the candidate will be assessed as to whether they meet the criteria.
- A means it is assessed using the application form
- I means that a question will be asked at the interview
- T means you will need to do a test
- P means a presentation is required
-
Application form - is a structured version of a CV. It provides spaces for all answers required by the employer.
Ensure you answer all questions. Remember you need to provide sufficient information to show you meet the person specification criteria being assessed using the application form.
-
Checklist - is derived from the person specification and is used by the employer to rank different candidates' application forms. The highest ranking candidates will be invited for interview. (The people whose application forms score most highly in the items assess by the application form).
